How Psychiatry Is Misunderstood

Psychiatry is often misunderstood by people who don’t understand the topic and nature of psychiatric treatment or hold on too tightly to their culture and its beliefs. This is the reason why people have so many misconceptions about psychiatry. Research has been conducted on most of these misconceptions and they have been proven to be wrong. Science does not provide any evidence to support these ‘myths’ that people strongly believe in. instead science and researchers blame these myths to be the cause of why some psychiatric patients are denied treatment.

We will be highlighting some misconceptions that people live by when it comes to psychiatry. Some of the misconceptions are as follows:

1. People believe that physical illness and psychiatric illness is different; psychiatric illness is a special kind of illness. However the World Health Organization says that health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. By studying this meaning, we can understand the psychiatric illness is not different from physical illness. Just like physical illness affects the different body parts, psychiatric illness will affect behavior and has to be treated.

2. People believe that all patients who have psychiatric illnesses are violent in nature and are dangerous. This has been proven wrong for a number of occasions when psychiatric patients are not violent.

3. A very odd belief that some people cling on to is that once a psychiatric patient visits the market he/she will never get well. This is extremely untrue because a lot of patients have been found in markets and have been taken in for treatment.

After being managed properly and being given treatment they have improved.

4. Some cultures believe that psychiatric illness is a sin for patients for their wrongdoings. Just like other illnesses are caused by bacteria or germs, stress, hormonal imbalance or genetic problems etc, can be the cause of psychiatric illness. This is not a punishment or a sin. It is simply a change in the body which affects a person’s behavior in a negative manner.

5. Some people believe that psychiatric illness is a prolonged illness that has no cure. People believe that even if the person shows signs of improvement, it is not for long since the illness relapses. Just like any other illness like cancer or cardiac disease, the treatment takes long and there is always a chance of relapses. However it is not a special case when it relates to psychiatric illness because it is an illness like any other and the odds of relapses of the condition are the same as with any other medical condition.

6. People also believe that psychiatric illness can spread from person to person, which is highly untrue. They cannot be transmitted through contact with the person. In fact, these patients very safe to stay close to.

These were some of the major misconceptions when it comes to psychiatry and psychiatric patients. There are many other misconceptions that people need to understand and deem wrong and give patients the treatment they need, without neglecting them.

Addiction and Recovery – Maintaining Your Recovery Motivation – Or You Will Relapse?

People often find their way to recovery in the midst of a crisis. Someone standing at the crossroads of recovery, may have been arrested for DUI, may have been fired, or may have received a scary report from the doctor. He may have heard the bottom line demand from his spouse– “Get help or we are getting a divorce.” Or, the alcoholic/addict may in fact, have a moment of clarity and really be able to see that he does have a problem and that help and abstinence are called for. The alcoholic/addict feels afraid. He feels ashamed.  He feels angry at others or at himself for being in this position in the first place.

Fear, coercion or crisis helps him find his way into recovery. Fear is a fairly good short term motivator, but not so good in the long run. Once the fear subsides and the crisis is over, it is very easy to lose your motivation and momentum. At the point where the cycle of addiction is interrupted by failing to take the next drink, dose, or joint, there is a lot of tension, anxiety, and mindfulness of where you are in the process. Detox or withdrawal may occur, with physical and/or emotional symptoms being very consciously experienced.

When you get to feeling better physically and emotionally after detoxing, it is easy to lose your momentum. Your focus on recovery can dissolve. Some of the problems that once motivated your recovery might be resolved now. Because you have quit drinking or using, your spouse and kids are once again speaking to you and are in the process of forgiving you. You may have even won back some trust. Everything seems to be going well.

Under these circumstances it is quite easy for you to take your eyes off the target and lose your focus on recovery. Erroneously, you may believe that your abstinence is not so fragile now.  Feeling better, you may think you have it “whipped”.

Without actively focusing on your continuing abstinence and recovery, your behavior can begin to drift away from the newly instituted behavioral changes that you have made. You run the risk of returning to old thinking, old feelings, and then ultimately old behavior.  The reason why this would happen is that you are not consciously taking steps to continue on a path of recovery. This path involves many changes in your behavior and in your life style. Without making conscious choices in regard to how each decision affects your new recovery life or your old addiction life, you are unconsciously choosing your old life. Choosing recovery is not like jump starting your damaged car battery where once you get it started, it recharges itself as run it. You have to continuously work a program of recovery. Without doing so, your efforts will be short-lived.

You will quit going to counseling. You will quit going to meetings. You will have stopped calling your recovery support people. Your defenses will go back up and you may take exception to the feedback of significant others who tell you that you are acting like you used to before recovery.

You won’t be able to see that you are on the road to relapse. You won’t be able to understand why they are concerned. You won’t be able to identify the behavioral changes that scare them because you will be back in denial. Being around old drinking/using environments and friends don’t scare you. You can’t understand why it would scare your significant others. After all, you told them that you are not going to relapse. You have learned your lesson. What more do they want?

After awhile, you will begin to think that you have your drinking or using under control now.  When you think of addiction as a thing of the past, that you now have it under control, you will begin to entertain the notion that you can now drink or use without negative consequences. If any of this sounds like your recent experience, you are in big trouble. You are in the relapse process and unless you do something now, you will relapse–and soon.

Finding Inner Peace through Meditation

Meditation is a relaxation technique which has been performed by a lot of people from all over the world. Still, it is gaining more and more popularity due to its many benefits. One of these benefits is the improvement of focus and clarity. With such benefits, a person can finish his daily tasks without undergoing a lot of stress.

Meditation can also help prevent different problems such as cardiovascular disease, autoimmune problems, depression, digestive problems, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, obesity and more. It also helps people recover faster from illnesses, surgery or trauma.

However, these are not the only reasons as to why this relaxation technique is gaining much of its popularity. Many people learn meditation not only for the welfare of their mind and body, but also for spiritual purposes as well.

Finding inner peace is what many people are concerned of. Although finding inner peace is the hardest thing to do, it is worth all the effort. This is due to the fact that no book or article can give you all the answers to help you achieve inner peace. However, with proper meditation, inner peace can be attained.

Meditating properly means clearing a place, where you plan to meditate, of all the clutters and dirt. Many meditation experts believed that the cleanliness and orderliness of a place can affect your meditation. A clean and organized place can help you think clearly and focus more on this activity.

It is also best to find the right time to meditate. Although you can meditate anywhere and at any time, it is still best to find 2 appropriate times for this activity.

Most experts believe that meditating during early mornings and during evenings before going to sleep or eating dinner, are the more effective times for meditation.

This is mainly due to the fact that most people in your home are still sleeping or are still asleep. Thus, no one will be around to bother you. Another reason for this is that during early morning and during evenings, the environment is usually calm.

But the most important part in finding inner peace through meditation is to be patient. Always bear in mind that finding inner peace doesn’t happen overnight. It will take some time before you can achieve this status.

Learning To Meditate – A Simple Yet Powerful Meditation Exercise

Life these days is very demanding and stressful. If you are like most people, you are working hard to survive and still you feel unhappy, like you don’t have enough time to get everything done, thus your life becomes stressful. Stress makes you tired and causes frustration and unhappiness. It can even affect your health. The solution comes from the spiritual world and is called meditation. A few minutes of meditation every day can drive stress away and boost your self-esteem. It can also give you a feeling of completion and fulfillment.

In this article I will give you a simple yet powerful meditation exercise in a step-by-step manner so as to understand it and apply it. Perform the exercise for 10-15 minutes a day and you will definitely find some inner peace and balance. You will also understand your own mind better. The exercise can be performed by any logical person who seeks the truth. Here are the steps:

Step 1: Stop Distractions.
You will need to be alone in a quiet, private place. It is important to stop all distractions and make your mind clearer and more lucid. To accomplish this sit in a comfortable position (try the classic cross-legged posture, it works wonders for most people). The key is to keep your back straight. Close your eyes for a while and start breathing. Breath naturally through your nostrils. Don’t attempt to control your breath, just try to become aware of the sensation of the breath as you inhale and exhale.

Step 2: Keep the feeling
Concentrate on this breathing sensation as much as you can. Try not to think of anything else. If you are inexperienced this will not be easy at first but the more you do it, the better you become at it! You will encounter dozens of different thoughts that aim to distract you. Don’t be tempted. Stay focused on the sensation of your breath. When you discover that your mind is following thoughts of distraction, immediately return it to the breath. Practice that as much as you can. Finally, the distracting thoughts will subside and you will encounter a feeling of peace and relaxation. Try to keep that feeling for as long as possible.

When you are done, feel refreshed and ready to face the challenges of life. Do this at least 10-15 minutes a day and notice your progress every time. Gradually, your mind will become more lucid and spacious. You will be able to reduce stress and solve your usual every day problems and issues. Other people will feel the change inside you and will start to interact better. This way your relationships will improve. This simple yet powerful meditation exercise can also do miracles in your love life especially if it is performed by both you and your soulmate.

Tips: If you want to add more magic to the meditation process you can use a candle and an incense stick. Carefully light the candle and the incense stick before you start the exercise and extinguish them when you are done. You can look at the flame of the candle while trying to send distractive thoughts away. The incense stick will fill your space with countless spirits and entities.

Safe and Sound With Cackleberries Mom: Mother Develops Cackleberries Safe Online World for 3-7 Year Olds, After Work with At-Risk Kids

Vancouver, British Columbia (PRWEB) September 22, 2011

Picture slip sliding down a tree slide to the river surrounded by fun friends like Cackasaurus, Kluttermonk and Pouleteer. Picture a place of subterranean energy stones, painted skies, and opal oceans. This is a friendly world of childlike blues and greens and yellows. In Oville, where Cackleberries reside; meet up with friends, have fun and also learn. This is a world reminiscent of a more innocent earlier time, a world of childhood wonder. This unique edutainment site where safety comes first has a mission to restore the innocence to childhood and in a real life story twist, it was virtual world producer and creator Eronne Fosters experience with street and addicted youth that made her so determined to create this site.

My attitude to troubled youth was pretty main-stream, says Eronne, I figured they were making bad choices, they deserved what they got, wed be much safer if they were all in jail, no matter how bad their upbringing was by the time youre 18 get over it. But her attitude took a complete about turn when her young son Jordan brought a classroom acquaintance home from school. The very first young man that came to live with us, he stood up in the classroom and said I have no place to go, my son said my mom will take you. I heard his story his Dad lived in a car, his mother was a drug addict and he had nowhere to go. Soon she realized that many kids had the same problem. What became very apparent to me really quickly is that boys are not going to social services, if they are on the street they are on their own. Determined to make a difference in these kids lives Eronne soon opened her doors to many more children. All of them had backgrounds which would bring tears to your eyes; we had a house full of kids. I gave them a bed, I gave them hugs, and a phone number to call. Her attitude also took a 180 degree turn. I realized that in order to have choice you have to know there are other options, and many of these kids have no other options, and even those that do the psychological and physical damage that has been done to them, removes the motivation for them to make the right choice.

This realization that early delivery of choices, both educational and social, could make a world of difference in the lives of children spurred Eronne forward to create a safe environment for child play and learning. When I was a kid there was very little media in our lives, there was no interference in our play time, we knew nothing about sex violence and consumerism. While the internet seemed like the ideal delivery mechanism it too comes fraught with problems in terms of putting youth at risk. It led me to look at how kids were growing up and how much influence they were getting from the outside world and how much of it was negative, and so we developed a way to deliver an online world where the kids do not have wider access to the internet and are not meeting strangers online or being subjected to advertiser messages.

This month’s launch of the Cackleberries web site and the creative play world of Oville is the culmination of Eronne and her teams determination to deliver a safe world where children between the ages of 3 and 7 get the basic skills to develop into healthy happy adults. Visit Oville it is free! Let Mumbee show you around. She has great wisdom and really knows her stuff, mainly, because her mother was one smart duck, Mumbee grew up in Oville with her best friends Duke, Blanche Mange and Kluttermonk, along with Terra, Captain Jack and Miss Honey Bun; these grownups help the young ones grow up healthy, happy and smart. Together they teach about science, nature, music, art, literature, history and most importantly, how to get along. Welcome to a life of fantasy, mystery, adventure, and lots of challenges, subtle education and just a really good place to be. Like the many kids that Eronne has befriended, feel safe and sound too, in the world of the Cackleberries Mom!

Melissa Crabtree kicks off her CD release tour for “The Day I Fell In The Water” on Friday, October 5th at IMA’s big barn in Goshen, MA.

Goshen, MA (PRWEB) October 01, 2012

Melissa Crabtree releases “The Day I Fell in the Water”

IMAs big barn – Friday , October 5th – 8pm

165 Cape Street (Hwy112)

Goshen, MA 01032

with special guest: Jane Karras

Tickets: $ 12 advance/$ 15 door – All ages

Folk singer-songwriter, Melissa Crabtree, releases her third album entitled “The Day I Fell in the Water.” Crabtree lives two lives, one as a wilderness guide and the other as a working musician. At this intersection of nature and music, she conjures songs like a contemporary female Woody Guthrie songs that amuse, inspire and entertain. Whether shes guiding a raft through the Grand Canyon or writing songs about the majesty of the American West, Crabtrees heartfelt love for the natural world transports her listeners to the wild places she knows best.

“My songs are a record of my life which flow through me while I am living outside in the wilderness and on the water,” she comments.

Crabtree herself has shared the stage with leading performers such as Joan Osborne, Ani Difranco, Patty Larkin, David Wilcox, and Tony Furtado. In performance, she delivers her poignant stories in a distinctly husky alto with a pleasing twang on her guitar. Smooth and delicate harmonies present her lyrics about life, relationships and politics between Crabtree and the rivers, ancient canyon walls, and the oceans. After having received numerous awards (Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Rocky Mountain Folk Festival, and Kerrville Folk Festival) and completing many successful tours in the last decade, Melissa has given us a truly beautiful gift with “The Day I Fell in the Water.”

On “The Day I Fell in the Water,” songs such as “Spirit Mountain” and “Daisies Talk” paint an honest picture of the muses Crabtree finds in the natural world. However its not just her storytelling thats impressive; Crabtree has a way of incorporating a message into her songs that are both unique and exalting. The song “Bees” is complemented by the fluttering sounds of a mandolin while Crabtree addresses issues of wildlife conservation that she observes. Then there are songs like “The Day I Fell In the Water” and Water Canyon,” which deal with how the natural world has shaped her personal growth, delving more into matters of the heart. Her combination of Folk, Americana, and Country laced with themes of nature is both classic and refreshinga genuine window into the soul of a talented songwriter.

“The Day I Fell In the Water” is packed with talented performers, including Kris Delmhorst, Tony Furtado, Eliza Gilkyson, Libby Kirkpatrick, Julie Wolf, and Andre Moran. The album was mixed and mastered by Mark Hallman (Carole King, Eliza Gilkyson, Will Sexton) at Congress House in Austin, TX.
