Marriage As Meditation

Marriage, under the best of circumstances, can be likened to Pandora’s box in that it can set free all the negative quirks and egoic faults each other has. But there is something to be said for a close relationship between a husband and a wife in which both parties can “tell on themselves” and expose whatever ego issues arise between them. Fear, jealousy, insecurity and the like are utterly destructive forces in personal relationships, unless of course, these things can be honestly expressed and discussed as they arise. In this case there is no permanent harm. In this way the ego and its ways are disarmed even as it is brought to the Light of day where it is exposed and ultimately sterilized into nothingness in the same fashion that the fictional vampire is dissolved in sunlight.

It takes a strong commitment to what is right,… a strong commitment to the Truth…in order to overcome the self-protective and destructive aspects of the ego because it is highly embarrassing to look at, let alone admit to, what is wrong with oneself. It requires a greater commitment to the Truth than it does to saving face, to excuse making and/or denial in order to overcome ones ego. But really, what is the alternative to facing the truth about oneself? The alternative is to preserve and act out of the ego, and uphold all of its destructive ways, consciously or unconsciously. It is to defend, attack, excuse and/or accuse rather then face the truth about oneself. It is to act out of egoistic fear, jealousy or insecurity instead of passing through them to greater love between the two. It is to destroy the very integrity of the relationship because truth and reality is sacrificed for the lie.

It is the very definition of hell within a relationship….a sickness that ferments in the darkness of denial, and slowly rots the integrity of the relationship from the inside out. There is something about a close relationship that brings to the surface all the egoic faults that otherwise would lay dormant within each other.

No wonder it is said that marriage is the place where one can “work out” ones salvation. Who doesn’t need to be saved from ones ego? Marriage is a chance to face head on and overcome ones ego as revealed in the mirror of an intimate relationship with another. And though it does not take two to make a spiritual practice out of a relationship, it is a real blessing when the two can come together to openly and honestly bring to the Light all that is selfish and self-serving between them. Exposure of the egoic play between the two not only exposes and disarms the ego and its games, but also allows for genuine respect and understanding to grow between them.

Respect for the strength of the truth-teller who dares to risk exposing them self for truths sake, but also for growing understanding and compassion for the inherited egoic conditioning the other carries yet wishes to overcome. Here in lays the hope and promise of marriage, and here in lays the possibility of a growing, lasting Love Relationship between two human beings.

Music Therapy ? How Can Music Therapy Work?

Music therapy is a unique style of therapy, involving music to help overcome cognitive, emotional, social, and physical problems. It may be used to help promote overall health, manage stress, improve memory, help expression of feelings, reduce or eliminate pain, or support healing from physical problems or disorders.

This form of healing is done through a music therapist.  The practitioner makes an initial assessment of the client’s overall emotional and physical well-being. Achieve Serenity and Happiness – Buddhist Walking Meditation

If you want to experience serenity and happiness, Buddhist walking meditation is one path. It is achieved by bringing a moment to moment awareness (power of now) into your daily life. The walking meditation provides many benefits, takes only 15 to 20 minutes per day and is an easy 5-step process.

Benefits of walking meditation:

* Feeling sense of serenity and happiness
* Achieving a deeply relaxed state
* Naturally “letting go of thoughts” (of the past or future)
* Experiencing Law of Impermanence (all things rise and pass away – nothing permanent – (Anicca or Anitya in Sanskrit)
* Feeling compassion and loving-kindness for all sentient beings

Walking meditation instruction:

General note: Wear comfortable clothing and choose a location (a seashore, a park, a quite neighborhood, your backyard, etc. Allow about 15 – 20 minutes for walking meditation.)

1. Keep your eyes open and start ‘conscious breathing’ by breathing in through your nose and breathing out through you mouth. Be sure to make the breathing audible.

2. Start walking at your normal pace (you can walk in a circle – no beginning and ending or you can walk forward and come back). After a while you might naturally walk slowly. NOTE: There is no destination only the journey.

3. Observe your breathing and allow all thoughts to come about. You might notice how your mind takes you to the past (by remembering something from the past or by trying to re-write ‘history’) or takes to the future (planning something in the future, imagining, day dreaming, etc). It is important that you do not try to get rid of all your thoughts. Letting go is a natural process that occurs by simply bringing awareness to your breathing, and thus into the present moment.

You might experience both thoughts and your breathing, and so you are in the present and observing your mind at work.

4. After you finish you walking meditation you can stay still or even sit down on a bench and close your eyes.

5. As you feel deeply relaxed, conclude your meditation with the loving-kindness mantra – Metta in Sanskrit. This should be done from the depths of your heart.

Loving-kindness Mantra (Metta as shared by Lama Surya Das) May all beings be happy, content and fulfilled, May all beings be healed and whole, May all beings have whatever they want and need May all beings be protected from harm and free from fear, May all beings be awakened, liberated and free, May there be peace on earth and the entire universe. As you continue doing walking meditation daily, you will achieve serenity and happiness by bringing yourself to the present moment (power of now). By using loving-kindness mantra (Metta), you will start cultivating compassion towards all sentient beings. The 5 step processes will make a profound difference in your life.

Most important, is that you do not become so overwhelmed or frustrated that you simply walk away deciding to attack it at another time. That is not going to help you create a relaxing home. These tips will get you started on the road to a home that is clutter free.

Begin Now – Do not put off what you can start today. The sooner you begin to declutter the sooner you will be able to relax in your home.
Start Small – Do not tackle on the entire house at once. Instead start small. Begin with a dresser, one drawer at a time. Begin with a stack of magazines or books finding a home for the keepers and deciding what to do with those you no longer need – trash or donation.
Ask Yourself – Each item needs you to ask why you are keeping it, will you ever use it again, and when was the last time you used it. How many single socks are you hanging on to hoping to one day find their mates? I love this example, because almost all of us are guilty of it. Out with the single socks!
Keep Going – Once you start your project keep your momentum going. Always start on one area and do not move on to the next until that area is done. In advance, decide how much time each day you can commit to the project and then stick to it.
Let it Go – Once you have decided something is going, remove it from the house as soon as possible. The longer it stays there more likely that you’ll land up keeping it around.
How are You Feeling – When you are giving things away where others may benefit you might feel terrific about it, or parting with the items might make you unhappy or uneasy. When you are throwing things out you might feel guilty. Feelings are natural. Acknowledge and move on.
Storage Options – There are things you are going to want to keep, and you can not put everything out that you keep or you will lose your battle to declutter. Instead invest in containers for storage, such as those Rubbermaid makes, filing cabinets, stackable bins, and whatever else you need to stay organized.

5 Mind Relaxation Exercises To Feel Calm And Relaxed

Mind relaxation exercises are supposed to calm your mind and ease tension away. If you find yourself agitated or restless, try coming up with positive thoughts.

In fact, you should start thinking happy thoughts and adopt a joyful disposition on a daily basis. Laugh your heart out any chance you get. If you’re happier in general, then you’re less likely to be tensed or anxious.

One way to get a good laugh is to watch some comedy, blooper or gag videos on youtube. My favorite is watching “Just For Laughs” gags.

Exercise 5: Meditate.

Meditation has been around for so long, but has yet to lose its touch. If you want to relax your mind, there’s nothing like a few minutes of serious meditation to get you in a calm state. Plus, it’s easy to do.

Simply find a quiet spot, close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing. Don’t let other external noises distract you. Focus on yourself and observe as your heart rate slows down.

As diverse as these suggestions are, not everyone responds to the same techniques. Some of these mind relaxation exercises might work better for you than for others, or vice-versa. The key is not to force all of them to fit you, but to find the one that you can relate to the most and stick with it.

Read this definition several times to get the full meaning of it.

Note that motivation is internally driven. People must motivate themselves. Managers don’t motivate people. Rather managers create conditions and an environment where people are self motivated.

Secondly, without a goal, motivation doesn’t exist.
In order for people to be motivated, there must be a sense of purpose and reason for expending the mental and physical energy required. The goal must have meaning to the person.

Psychologists have studied human motivation for years. Unfortunately, there is a disconnect between what science knows about human motivation and behavior, and what the business world does.

For example, science tells us that extrinsic motivators, fear and reward, are temporary and don’t change underlying attitudes which influence behavior. Yet, many organizations rely mainly or exclusively on extrinsic motivation to stimulate higher levels of performance.

In a study done by MIT, and then replicated several times since, researchers studied the impact of rewards on performance. The results in every case showed that if the task involved even a small amount of cognitive ability (thinking, creating, reasoning, problem solving, etc.), the higher the reward the worse the performance.

The only time the size of the reward related to performance was for physical tasks where the amount of physical effort expended correlated directly to performance.

That is not to say that people are not motivated by money. If people feel that they are not compensated fairly, it will have an impact on their performance. Money is what Frederick Herzberg calls a hygiene factor. According to Herzberg, hygiene factors are sources of demotivation if not addressed, but in themselves do not provide motivation.

The science of motivation says that higher performance will only come when people are intrinsically motivated. According to research by Dan Pink, three factors correlated with high levels of intrinsic motivation.

The first is autonomy. Autonomy is having the freedom to control and direct one’s own work. Managers who want to have employees with high levels of intrinsic motivation need to let their people do the job. I have used quote by Bill Oncken many times because I think it is such a good piece of advice for any manager—”Practice hands off management as much as possible, and hands on management only as necessary.” People learn responsibility only when they are given responsibility.

With today’s technology that enables a manager to stay in touch and be available 24/7, I worry that we are creating a generation of workers who won’t make a decision because they can easily find the boss and get him or her to make the decision.

The second factor that Pink finds correlates with intrinsic motivation is mastery. Mastery is the natural human urge to grow, learn, and get better. We are all naturally competitive with ourselves and with others. People are more apt to be intrinsically motivated if there is challenge in the job. Measurement and goal setting facilitate mastery. I’ve observed many times that all a manager has to do is give people some way to keep score on the job, and then let the people go.

The third factor is purpose. Purpose is the feeling of being able to make a contribution. The more that people find meaning and significance in their work, the more that they will be intrinsically motivated.

In one plant that I managed, we had a standard practice of having the management staff take customers and other important visitors on plant tours. Over time we began to let the front line workers do the tours. We found it was a lot more impressive to our customers to have the workers talk about what they did, than a group of us upper level people. The ownership and commitment of the front line workforce increased significantly and they were able to associate what they did on a daily basis with our customers. This increased their intrinsic motivation without costing the company anything.
