After school activities are the rage of the day. With about $ 500 million
invested in these programs and more than 10 million children attending
them in America alone, the popularity of these activities cannot be
overlooked. Everyone understands the need to develop new skills, gain more
knowledge and keep the children safe when parents are working.

The most important factor in the success of any program is the
relationship between the children participating in the program and the
adult members who work with these children. Often, children may confide in
an adult member who is not a teacher. This kind of emotional interaction
is a must when children are struggling to make sense of the whirlpool of
emotions that assail them.

Direct contact with professionals can be an inspiring experience. Children
are very much impressed by the knowledge and experience of these adults.
Young people gain a lot of knowledge and experience when they deal with
experienced adults and older youth who serve as teachers or mentors in
these programs. These mentors are different from the teachers in the
school and children are more likely to draw inspiration from them.

After school activities that are managed professionally by people who are
successful in their own fields of expertise will produce children who are
more enthusiastic and successful. Meaningful interaction with adults is a
learning experience in itself.

For millions of parents around the world, the day does not end with the school bell. There are still pictures to be painted, songs to be sung and games to be played. This all adds up to keeping children happy, safe and out of trouble. But, parents have to steer away from going overboard.

After school is not baby-sitting:
After school activities thrive only if it is backed by sufficient parental involvement. What would a soccer match be without parents cheering their little heroes from the sidelines?.

Research and choose:
Instead of convenience being the decisive factor, find out things that will interest your child. Once you select a program, get the fine print and find out what you have to contribute.

Free time:
Many children attend piano classes, followed by ballet and squeeze in some time for play dates in between just before they rush home in time for bed. This rigor is too much for a child. So, go slow.

When to quit:
Often, parents enroll their child in an activity to discover that he may not be the prodigy they thought he would be. This is the time to let go. Your child may not become the next wonder-kid. But, let him cultivate an interest that he enjoys. Remember, happiness and fulfillment are all that matter.

Research and studies show that our children are growing fater by the
day. Many families all over America are struggling to keep the weight of
their children within reasonable limits. As a parent, I know that it’s
nearly impossible for me to look into the tear-filled eyes of my son and
refuse food.

So, what’s the alternative? Studies show that the number one reason for
obesity in children is not junk food and colas. It’s actually TV.
Children tend to plop themselves on the sofa and munch away happily when
they are in front of the TV sets. But, once the set is off, their natural
buoyancy will lead the children to do stuff and to move their body. THey will then be diverted from eating.

Addiction and Recovery – Preventing Relapse After Surgery

You are ultimately responsible for your own addiction recovery.  When you know that you have to have surgery, it is important to keep everyone treating you informed about your recovery and addiction history, including the names of the drugs, the amounts, the lengths of time that you took them, and your last use.  You are responsible for asking a lot of questions of the treatment team.  Questions like the following are appropriate:  “How long will surgery take?”  “What is the procedure and what will it entail?”  What kinds of anesthesia will be administered?”  “How long will I need pain medications after surgery?”  “What kinds of pain medications do you usually prescribe for post-op?”  “What kinds of different choices for pain medications are available to recovering addicts who are concerned about having their addiction triggered?”  “What doctors will I be working with for post-op procedures and checkups?”  Make sure that all the medical professionals that you are working with understand that you are an alcoholic/addict in recovery.

Maintain complete honesty all the way through the process.  If you are scared, say it.  If you are given a medication that has a mood/mind altering effect, or has triggered some euphoric recall or craving, tell them.  Your feedback on how you are reacting each step of the way, can help inform your treatment in the most beneficial ways and additionally be most protective of your continuing recovery.

It is also crucial to be completely honest and communicative to those in your support network. When planning surgery, consult with your AA/NA friends of buddies who have already experienced what you are going through.  Talk to the old guys/gals in the group, even if you don’t normally hang out with them.  Ask them whether they have been through it or been witness to others going through it.  Ask for any recommendations that they may have.

Recovery wisdom encourages any recovering persons going through surgery to have as many “program” folks around him/her as possible for support.  This means having people in recovery doing a kind of “babysitting” with you, not around the clock, but “checking in and checking on”.  Be honest with them about what you are thinking, feeling, and doing.  When you feel lousy, you probably won’t want a lot of company.  Do it anyway.  This is when you need it most.

After you go home, you may still be on pain medications.  It is crucial that you give your pain medications to someone else to dispense to you.  This may be a spouse, a sponsor, a nursing service, but someone other than you should be in charge of the medications.  You may think that you are not vulnerable for relapse, since you feel confident.  Not wanting to relapse is insufficient to prevent relapse.  Giving control of the pain medications to someone else may bee feel completely unjustified and it may seem like an unnecessary step, especially in light of surrendering control to the medical professionals with surgery.

Making it through surgery and post-op pain management is a major challenge to your continued recovery.  It takes a lot of awareness and utilization of recovery skills that yoiu may just be beginning to develop.  To maintain recovery, give the meds to someone who will not give in to your anger and frustration.  They should make sure that they know exactly what the prescription directions say and whether there is any leeway in dosing.  Addicts often hear something other than what the doctor or pharmacist says about doses.  Or the fear of the pain may drive dishonest behavior.

More than the physical response to surgery drives the perception of pain.  It is very easy to get into a circular pattern when the pain creates anxiety or fear, which leads to more pain and tension and the need for more medication.  The body craving medication can create emotional or psychological symptoms as well as an increased perception of pain, which drives the need for more pain medications.

Remember too, that mind/mood altering medications drug your thinking and feeling as well as your physical body.  An example would be distorted beliefs about the motives of others.  If you think that you are in pain because the treatment team is ignoring your needs, you will probably feel angry and frustrated.  Your communication of that anger and frustration may be acted out if you are not proficient at appropriate expression and management of emotions.  You might argue with the spouse who is administering your pain medications.  If you distrust the motives or knowledge of the doctor or nursing staff, you may feel justified in manipulating them for more (or different) drugs.

The more the psychological or emotional turmoil associated with the pain, the more the tendency to act it out, producing more turmoil, which can be experienced as more pain, and increased need for drugs. This turns into a self-reinforcing circular pattern.

This sounds complicated.  In fact, when you stay honest and talk about your experiences, physical and emotional, from the beginning, you are better able to identify the thoughts you are having about pain, the emotions attached to it, and to move from acting out feelings, to working through them, asking for help, and practicing effective relapse prevention.  This whole description applied to the short term recovery period after surgery.  For chronic pain issues or long term recovery necessitating mind altering drugs over an extended period of time, it is even more complicated.

If you or someone you love anticipates surgery and is fearful of the effect that it may have on his/her/your recovery, there are other information resources available to help navigate those dangerous waters. You are welcome to use the resources that you may find on my website at * http://www.peggyferguson.com. There are a number of recovery articles and a “Recommended Readings” page. Drug Addictions That Occur After An Injury

Most all individuals can empathize with the suffering that may occur from some sort of injury at one time or another in our lives.  Some cases may be worse than that of others, but most seem to have some understanding of what is like to incur sever pain and the recovery process it all entails.  Those who have not, can consider themselves the minority, and lucky few.

In recovering from broken bones, sprained ankles, tendinitis, or even something as serious as a devastating car crash; we are often given a healthy supply of pain medications by our physicians, to ease the suffering.  In taking these prescription medications safely and as per our doctors recommendations, we may heal just fine.  Although, there are cases in which an individual may become addicted to the feeling of a lesser pain, or a relaxed state of body.  With this, there may be a chance of drug addiction after incurring an injury.

How do I know if my loved one is becoming addicted to their pain medications and/or prescription meds?
It is often the case that an individual who is becoming addicted to pain meds or prescription drugs, will over-exaggerate their pain level.  They will immediately ask for the pain pills instead of finding other ways in which to minimize their pain.  These ways may include:  readjusting themselves in bed, readjusting their injured body part, loosening a bandage, etc.  When this is the case, unfortunately you may be serving pills to a loved one who is becoming addicted to their prescription.

Another sign that your friend or family member may be becoming addicted, is when your loved one seems to be recovering in a healthy and complete manner, but are still falling into the habit of reaching for the prescription drugs.  You may test your theory by taking the prescription away from the patient’s bedside, so that they must ask each time they are in need of their pills.  This is a good way in which to monitor their drug use, and perhaps, abuse.

Yet another sign of possible addiction, is if the dosage continues to run out, before the refill is due; or before another bottle of the prescription is necessary.  Monitor your friend or family member’s pill intake each day.  If the pills are quickly disappearing, there may be an issue at hand.

Prescription medication must be taken with care, and is not prescribed to be a consistent way to avoid the issue at hand – an injury.  When an individual is injured, a certain amount of pain should be expected.  The meds are there to ease that pain, not numb the patient completely.

If you or somebody you care for is suffering from a potential addiction to prescription or pain medications, it is often best to speak directly with the professionals.  A drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in your area may have the answers to questions you have been pondering.  Rehabilitation programs are everywhere, and professionals within those centers and programs are ready and willing to be of service.

Safe and Sound With Cackleberries Mom: Mother Develops Cackleberries Safe Online World for 3-7 Year Olds, After Work with At-Risk Kids

Vancouver, British Columbia (PRWEB) September 22, 2011

Picture slip sliding down a tree slide to the river surrounded by fun friends like Cackasaurus, Kluttermonk and Pouleteer. Picture a place of subterranean energy stones, painted skies, and opal oceans. This is a friendly world of childlike blues and greens and yellows. In Oville, where Cackleberries reside; meet up with friends, have fun and also learn. This is a world reminiscent of a more innocent earlier time, a world of childhood wonder. This unique edutainment site where safety comes first has a mission to restore the innocence to childhood and in a real life story twist, it was virtual world producer and creator Eronne Fosters experience with street and addicted youth that made her so determined to create this site.

My attitude to troubled youth was pretty main-stream, says Eronne, I figured they were making bad choices, they deserved what they got, wed be much safer if they were all in jail, no matter how bad their upbringing was by the time youre 18 get over it. But her attitude took a complete about turn when her young son Jordan brought a classroom acquaintance home from school. The very first young man that came to live with us, he stood up in the classroom and said I have no place to go, my son said my mom will take you. I heard his story his Dad lived in a car, his mother was a drug addict and he had nowhere to go. Soon she realized that many kids had the same problem. What became very apparent to me really quickly is that boys are not going to social services, if they are on the street they are on their own. Determined to make a difference in these kids lives Eronne soon opened her doors to many more children. All of them had backgrounds which would bring tears to your eyes; we had a house full of kids. I gave them a bed, I gave them hugs, and a phone number to call. Her attitude also took a 180 degree turn. I realized that in order to have choice you have to know there are other options, and many of these kids have no other options, and even those that do the psychological and physical damage that has been done to them, removes the motivation for them to make the right choice.

This realization that early delivery of choices, both educational and social, could make a world of difference in the lives of children spurred Eronne forward to create a safe environment for child play and learning. When I was a kid there was very little media in our lives, there was no interference in our play time, we knew nothing about sex violence and consumerism. While the internet seemed like the ideal delivery mechanism it too comes fraught with problems in terms of putting youth at risk. It led me to look at how kids were growing up and how much influence they were getting from the outside world and how much of it was negative, and so we developed a way to deliver an online world where the kids do not have wider access to the internet and are not meeting strangers online or being subjected to advertiser messages.

This month’s launch of the Cackleberries web site and the creative play world of Oville is the culmination of Eronne and her teams determination to deliver a safe world where children between the ages of 3 and 7 get the basic skills to develop into healthy happy adults. Visit Oville it is free! Let Mumbee show you around. Together they teach about science, nature, music, art, literature, history and most importantly, how to get along. Welcome to a life of fantasy, mystery, adventure, and lots of challenges, subtle education and just a really good place to be. New York-Based Massage Therapist Karina Yanku Announces Increased Bookings After Being Featured in Edya Kalevs MELT, Yoga and Wellness Newsletter

New York, NY (PRWEB) July 18, 2013

Serendipity is a beautiful thing; especially when one steps back and allows the Universe to work its magic. Take, for example, a chance meeting back in 2008 at a wellness seminar at Matthew Corozine Studio Theatre in Times Square. Karina Yanku, a massage therapist and Edya Kalev, a yoga instructor, have stayed in touch; sharing ideas, inviting each other to networking events, and supporting each others endeavors. Recently, Karina Yanku was featured in the MELT, Yoga and Wellness newsletter, and is amazed at how her client base has doubled since this singular article was published just two months ago. Ms.Kalev was so touched by Yankus story of how she overcame a childhood brain injury and took inspiration from her recovery to create OANAMassage to help with coordination, balance and memory.

As the first-born of three girls, Yankus mother was in labor with her for 18 long hours. When she was born everything appeared normal, but as she was developing, her parents noticed that she was having difficulty with locomotion, eye-hand coordination and severe behavioral issues. Her parents went on a painstaking mission to find a doctor who could help figure out what was going on, and it was discovered that she suffered a brain injury – either in utero or because of a long, traumatic birth.

Although Ms.Yankus parents were told by countless doctors that she’d never develop the coordination to ride a bicycle and would remain remedial for the rest of her life, as fate would have it, their best friends had also a son with a brain injury. It was through them that they learned about the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential, a cutting-edge, progressive facility that treats brain-injured patients through a unique process called “Patterning”. This Patterning is designed to train the uninjured part of the brain to overcompensate for the part that is injured, thereby “rewiring” a patient’s neurological connections and improving functions.

Until she received this therapy, the only things that would calm her down were rhythm and music. Her father also had a love for music, as well as her grandparents, who would buy her toy instruments so that she could “jam” with Dad. As the oldest child, she also possessed a strong maternal instinct, and enjoyed helping to care for her two younger sisters. As a kid growing up in the 60s, Yanku had two distinct career ambitions: to be a nurse so she could take care of people, or to be one of the Beatles so she could make music.

Fast-forward past an unhealthy detour into the corporate world, she came to an awakening of sorts during a spiritual retreat in Upstate New York in 1996. Through group meditation and chanting, she became reacquainted with her passion for healing. It was at that point that she enrolled in massage school, and she hasn’t looked back since. Becoming a massage therapist has been the most rewarding decision shes ever made.

Wanting to combine her musical talents into her massage practice, four years ago Yanku embarked on a creative mission to develop OanaMassage, the first-of-its kind rhythmic, choreographed massage with it’s own musical score that matches every single massage stroke. The entire session is performed at 60 beats per minute, which, research has proven, assists with right/left brain synchronization, and also mimics the collective rhythm of the Earths Core, otherwise known as Schumanns Resonance.

So, what happens during an OanaMassage? Essentially, a persons right (creative) brain is enjoying the massage and the music, while the left (logical) brain is recognizing the corresponding patterns of the music and the massage in sync with each other. When a person receives OanaMassage frequently, he/she may start to anticipate the musical rhythm and the sequence of massage strokes, thereby enhancing healing on a much deeper level.

Karina Yanku, LMT is a New York-based massage therapist and musician who specializes in touch, rhythm and sound for the body, mind and soul. For more information, email info(at)karinyanku(dot)com or visit http://www.karinayanku.com.

Drug Rehab Programs – Staying Sober After Addiction Treatment Recovery

When it comes to drug rehab programs one of the major goals that they will stress is that their job is to keep a client in the program until they are medically cleared to leave. This is mainly so that they can keep them in the program long enough to help them begin the process of addiction recovery. There are many drug rehab programs that have begun to treat more than just the addiction and have started to also treat the underlying issues also known as comorbidities as well. Many rehab centers have started doing this because the underlying issues can be some of the hardest obstacles to get past in order to help a patient or client actually begin addiction recovery.

For example – When a patient is involved in a one on one therapy sessions, a group session, or a meeting for a 12 step program and they happen to have an anxiety attack or their ADD kicks in, then they cannot concentrate on what they are supposed to be learning in the session. This is completely blocking them from getting the treatment they need plus they will not be able to get to the recovery stage if the anxiety attacks are not addressed first.

Since many clients of drug rehab programs suffer from ADHD, ADD, anxiety, headaches, depression, and insomnia, many centers for rehab have began to use neurotherapy as a part of their process to deal with these illnesses. It has been proven that neurotherapy can reduce stress, headaches, and anxiety so that the patients have a better chance at recovery from their addiction.

It is not easy to become sober when you have been addicted to a drug or many drugs for many years. It is a very stressful task and it is something that will take time, effort, and support. There are many new methods of treatment that have been discovered and are being used to help patients cope with the addiction they are fighting and have proven that more recovering drug addicts are able to stick with the 12 step program well after they have made it into the addiction recovery stage.
