Reading helps people learn a great deal about many things, and that includes children. It starts with reading to very young children frequently. Read favorite books over and over, asking your youngster to point out main characters or tell you what happens next. As you move on to different stories, your child’s love for books will continue to expand.
As your kids get older, encourage them to read on their own. There are many excellent children’s books around to choose from. Allow small children to choose a book at the store occasionally, instead of a toy. Look for book sets or collections and give new editions as presents along with other surprises on special occasions.
When you feel your child can handle the responsibility, bring him or her to the library to sign up for a card and pick from the selection of children’s books. Let your kid select the type and number of books to check out. You don’t want to overdo it, so permit your son or daughter to find out the pace.
Express your own love for reading as well. Setting aside some quiet time occasionally to sit down with your own book will also encourage your child to read more. Your kid will quickly become a more knowledgeable, well-rounded person if you help him or her construct a love for reading at an early age.
The best reading for your child will explore other cultures, our planet, ourselves. It’s making time for make-believe and letting imaginations run wild and free. Most of all, it’s about using the power of stories to nourish the imaginative spark in every person and strengthen connections with family members, the global community, and the earth. The book you read to your kid and the books your child read ought to have within it beautiful art and meaningful stories respect the innate wisdom of small children and have the ability to nourish the creative spark in all of us. Also, reading for a child should be stories that build deep and lasting connections-whether it’s a child and parent connecting over a book; a child connecting to the universal wisdom of other cultures; or a broad community of men and women connecting through shared values and the desire to help small children become happy, engaged members of a global community.
As parents let’s make sure we introduce literature to our kids which share our goals of global understanding, empowering kids through art and story, and saving and maintaining the earth for future generations.
