New Resources on Adolescent Grief and Bereavement

Eugene, Oregon (PRWEB) September 27, 2011

Losing a loved one is a difficult time for anyone at any age, said Steven Ungerleider, PhD., founding editor of The Prevention Researcher. But for an adolescent, such a loss can be especially difficult.

During adolescence, many young people unfortunately become bereaved due to the death of a family member, loved one, or friend. Most youth are resilient and recover from their grief fairly soon but many others have difficulty and may need the help of supportive adults

In the current issue of The Prevention Researcher, four researchers examine how bereavement impacts adolescent development, explore the influence of culture on adolescent grief, provide insight into adolescents mourning process, and discuss strategies for supporting grieving youth, including use of music therapy.

David Balk, PhD. writes that In order to understand how grieving youth respond to the loss of a loved one, it is important for counselors, clinicians, and others working with youth to understand how bereavement impacts adolescent development and how adolescent development impacts bereavement. In his article, Dr. Balk explores these two components focusing on cognitive, behavioral, and affective responses during three stages of adolescence and discusses human responses to bereavement.

Sandra Lopez, D.C.S.W., examines culture as an influencing factor in adolescent grief and bereavement, introducing a framework for understanding culture and its components. She provides a case illustration that provides practical guidelines for honoring cultural differences for grieving adolescents.

An interview by Carol Thomas, PhD. with Wendy Littner Thomson, a bereavement coordinator in a hospice program, provides insight into the mourning process and shows how adults can be effective in helping youth who are struggling with grief. Ms. Thomson notes that whats written in most high school health textbooks about stages of grief is outdated. We dont get over grief. We learn to live with it; we integrate it into our being, our identity, and the way we see the world.

Katrina McFerron, PhD., writes in Music Therapy with Bereaved Youth: Expressing Grief and Feeling Better that music therapy is particularly effective for promoting resolution of grief-related feelings. She outlines relevant outcomes for the prevention of health problems in response to bereavement among adolescents.

Treatment Resources For Outpatient Drug Rehab

It is imperative that patients in outpatient drug rehab programs establish goals of being able to enjoy life without using the drugs of abuse or alcohol they have come to rely on to function as normal. There are traditionally three phases of addiction treatment at outpatient drug rehab programs: detoxification, rehabilitation and continuing long term care. Every outpatient program follows a unique curriculum for treating patients, but they all share the common goal of providing users with the tools they need to break free of their addiction, ultimately improving all aspects of their lives. Throughout all three of these phases, online resources play a vital role in providing the needed support for patients that can mean the difference between long term success and failure in their efforts to become free of drugs of abuse or alcohol.

The Internet provides many excellent online resources for people who are seeking recovery from addiction and their families, with more being added on a consistent basis. For those who are struggling with alcohol addiction, there are places to turn for information regarding the disease with contact information and links to websites featuring educational resources about recovery. There are also links to many online resources that will assist with tracking a persons progress of recovery, there are provider locators that will connect with health care professionals in various specialties, and users will also find hundreds of videos and lectures about research and treatment of both inpatient programs and outpatient drug rehab. While some websites require no membership or logging on in order to access information, there are others that only take a minute or two to sign up for access.

In addition to general reference sites and social media websites, there are also many excellent websites dedicated to the particulars of outpatient drug rehab, such as the pharmaceuticals that are routinely used during treatment. At these websites, patients, family members and friends are able to communicate with others who have experience with certain medications, and they can also research those products as well.

On any given day, there are millions of Americans who battle alcohol addiction. Thanks to the Internet, awareness and assistance are becoming more widespread, bringing this disease to light. Some of the most excellent online resources for those who are battling addiction are social media websites that help people maintain their recovery and compulsive behaviors. These provide easy access to experts, resources, and the recovery community all of which prove to be essential in a users success in breaking free of their addiction. In addition, these online social media sites are important resources that include monthly book clubs, secure places for online personal journaling and countless other recovery support resources that support and enhance the entire outpatient drug rehab experience.

Music Software – Computer Music Resources

When choosing music software from the array of computer music resources available there are two programs that stand out and have become the industry standard.

These are Cubase and cakewalk. I prefer Cubase but this is because I have always used Cubase and before Cubase it was pro24, things have come along way since pro24 I can tell you.

Either of these music software programs will be more than enough for any music recording project, it is important to realise though that the results using this software will only be as good as the soundcard you have installed on your system.

The soundcard is the hub of your recording setup.

You need to check the spec of any soundcard you are thinking of using.

There are a lot to choose from as the computer music resources are ever growing.

You will be looking for a soundcard that has a very low noise to signal ratio and a full band width 20hz-20khz.
A sampling rate of 44.1 or greater and 16 bit or greater.

Also you want to consider how many channels you will need to record at the same time, many will only allow two.

The PC minimum spec should be Pentium 4 1500ghz 512mb ram the harddrive needs to spin at 7200rpm and be at least 80 gig.

A combination of these components will give you a recording system that is capable of producing world class results.

There are is also an array of music software plugins available to provide effects and processing.

Computer music resources are now fairly low cost so you can produce recordings that a few years ago would have cost tens of thousands of pounds.

See my article on recording tips and methods for more detailed information on how to use your medium cost computer to create world class recordings.

Chris Adams has been making music 30 years and has had 12 number ones in various download charts including amazon.com and mp3.com.
